Electrical Troubleshooting and Repair in Layton, UT
Flickering lights, a dead outlet, a breaker that will not stay on. Most electrical problems have a specific cause, and finding it is most of the job. We track it down and fix it properly, not just reset it and hope.
What People Call Us About
Flickering or dimming lights
Especially when an appliance kicks on. Usually a loose connection or an overloaded circuit.
Outlets that stopped working
Sometimes a tripped GFCI somewhere else in the house. Sometimes the wiring behind it.
Breakers that keep tripping
The breaker is doing its job. The question is what is making it work that hard.
Warm or discolored switch plates
Heat means resistance, and resistance means a connection is failing. Do not wait on this one.
Buzzing or crackling
From a switch, an outlet, or the panel. Always worth looking at the same day.
Half the house lost power
Often a tripped main or a failed connection. We find which and get it back on.
When Not to Wait
A burning or hot plastic smell, scorch marks around an outlet, a panel that is warm to the touch, or a breaker that trips again immediately after being reset are not things to leave until next week. Turn off the circuit if you can do it safely and call. These are the ones we will try to get to the same day.
How a Service Call Goes
Tell us what it is doing. When it started, what is affected, and whether anything changed in the house recently. Half the diagnosis often happens on the phone.
On-site testing. Kacey tests the circuit, the devices on it, and the panel, and works back to the actual fault.
A straight answer. You get told what is wrong and what it takes to fix, before any repair work starts.
The repair. Most issues are fixed in the same visit. If a part is needed we will say so up front.
A check of the rest. We look at the rest of the circuit before leaving, so you are not calling back next month about the same thing.
Finding the Cause, Not the Symptom
Plenty of electrical problems can be made to go away temporarily. Reset the breaker, swap the outlet, move the lamp. The problem comes back because nothing actually got fixed.
Kacey works the circuit instead. That means tracing what is on it, testing connections, checking the panel, and finding the point where it is actually failing. Sometimes that takes twenty minutes. Sometimes a wiring fault is buried in a wall and it takes longer.
Either way you get told what was wrong, what was done about it, and whether anything else on that circuit needs attention.

Why Older Layton Homes Have More of This
A lot of Layton housing went up between the 1950s and the 1980s, when Hill Air Force Base was driving growth. That wiring was done to the standards of its day and most of it has held up fine. What has changed is the load on it, and sixty years of connections slowly working loose.
Homes built between roughly 1965 and 1973 are also where we run into aluminum branch wiring. It was common then and it is not automatically a hazard, but the connections need specific hardware and they need to be done right. It is a frequent cause of the warm switch plates and flickering people call about.
If you are in an older part of town and small electrical problems keep cropping up, there is usually a pattern behind it rather than bad luck.
What It Usually Turns Out to Be
Loose connections
The most common cause by far. A terminal that has worked loose over decades heats up, arcs, and takes out everything downstream of it.
Overloaded circuits
More plugged in than the circuit was designed for. The fix is sometimes a new dedicated circuit rather than a repair.
Failing devices
Outlets, switches, and breakers wear out. A twenty-year-old outlet that no longer grips a plug is a real problem, not a cosmetic one.
